Trabzon’s old bazaar begins on the west side of Meydan Park. Kunduracılar Street was once the line the Silk Road took through the city; Taşhan, Vakıfhan, Alaca Han and the Bedesten all stand inside this bazaar, close to one another.

Good to know before you go

  1. Trabzon’s Ottoman-era hans (inns) were built along the axis where Kunduracılar Street, which carried the Silk Road, connects to the port and to Erzurum Street.

  2. The Provincial Yearbook of 1873 counts 33 hans in the city centre; seven of them survive today. Alacahan, Taşhan, Vakıfhan and the Bedesten are among these buildings.

  3. Taşhan was built in the 16th century by İskender Pasha, Governor of Trabzon; the Culture Portal gives its construction as 1531–1533.

  4. Vakıfhan is the three-storey han with a courtyard to the north-west of the Bedesten; according to the inscription on the fountain beside it, it was built by Hacı Yahya in 1781.

  5. Alaca Han, on Bakırcılar Street, has no inscription; from its architecture it is thought to date from the 18th century.
