The Kostaki Mansion was built for a banker in the early 1900s; today it is the Trabzon Museum. Its walls are covered in hand-painted decoration, and in 1924 it hosted Atatürk. The basement holds the archaeology section, the upper floor the ethnography section.

Good to know before you go

  1. The Kostaki Mansion was built as a residence for the Greek banker Kostaki Teofilaktos between 1898 and 1913 (the early 1900s); its architects have not been identified, but they are known to have been Italian and many of the materials to have been brought from Italy.

  3. Atatürk, his wife Latife Hanım and their delegation were hosted in this mansion on his first visit to Trabzon, on 15–17 September 1924.

  4. The building was allocated to the Ministry of Culture in 1987, restored between 1988 and 2001, and opened as the Trabzon Museum on 22 April 2001. The basement holds archaeological finds (Bronze Age to Ottoman), the ground floor displays the mansion itself, and the upper floor holds the ethnography section.

  5. One of the highlights of the collection is a Roman-period bronze statue of Hermes from the 2nd century AD, found in the Tabakhane rescue excavation in 1997.
