A monastery on the slope of Boztepe, looking down over the city. It was founded in the 14th century, in the reign of Alexios III; it spreads over two terraces and is enclosed by a high wall. After restoration it reopened to visitors in 2021.

Good to know before you go

  1. It stands on the slope of Boztepe, at a point overlooking the city. It was founded in the reign of Alexios III (1349–1390), repaired several times, and took its final form in the 19th century.

  2. It is built on two terraces and enclosed by a high protective wall. To the south are the rock church, which contains a holy spring, the chapel at its entrance and several cells.

  3. In the rock church there are inscriptions and portraits of Alexios III, his wife Theodora and his mother Eirene.

  4. Restored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality, the monastery opened to visitors on 11 September 2021.

Getting there from the hotel

Walk south from the hotel, towards Boztepe. The monastery is on the hillside, so the way is uphill; comfortable shoes are a good idea.
